Gamma-spectroscopy with scintillation detector

In this experiment gamma spectroscopy with scintillation detectors is done on radioactive samples. Scintillation detectors do not need a costly cooling like semiconductor detectors. Therefore they may be used for field experiments but the detection properties are behind those of semiconductors. The registered gamma rays are analysed according to there energy with a multi-channel-analyser. The experiment illustrates also radiation measurement and radiation safety procedures in medicine and industry.
The following exercises are to be solved:
- Discussion of physical effects in detectors by means of a Cs-137 spectrum
- Determination of the energy resolution of the spectrometer
- Record of two spectra of unknown samples, identification of the nuclides and there natural decay chains
- Determination of the mass attenuation coefficient of aluminium for different gamma energies
- Gamma-ray back scattering measurement
