Conflicts over the Rule of law in the EU

Martin Mendelski argues that the EU’s various rule of law conflicts have turned into an overlapping polyconflict about legality, legitimacy, sovereignty, constitutional identity and the truth. Each of these contested aspects behind rule of law conflicts is related to distinct questions, contradictory answers, contested concepts and competing stakeholders. His multiple perspectives approach towards rule of law conflicts allows for a more nuanced, differentiated and systematic exploration of a complex and contentious phenomenon, which will shape profoundly the relationships between the EU and its members in the next decades.
