Physics of Photothermal Single Particle Detection

Photothermal single particle microscopy relies on the detection of minute long range changes of the refractive index surrounding a heat releasing object. It has been implemented with different experimental approaches. In this talk, I will review the similarities of the detection scheme to Rutherford scattering and discuss different theoretical approaches that have been reported to describe the photothermal signal generation including its phase and magnitude in dependence of material properties and optical setup.
