NFDI4Culture

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is a project that is currently under development and is supported by the german research foundation (DFG). The NFDI has the objective to systematically index, edit, interconnect and enable access to the valuable stock of data from science and research. The NFDI brings multiple stakeholders together in a coordinated network of independent consortia tasked with providing science-driven data services to research communities.

Research data in the fields of tangible and intangible cultural heritage is tackled by the “NFDI4Culture” Initiative which was established by multiple specialist communities of scholars. Within the NFDI the consortium is working on an infrastructure primarily regarding non-textual cultural assets. The need for NFDI4Culture stems from the particularity of the researched subjects regarding the complex legal and ethical situation and the resulting subject-specific requirements for its research data management, but it also encompasses a cultural-political dimension.

The specific objectives were determined in close cooperation between stakeholders from research, memory institutions and infrastructure in the fields of interest (primarily art and music studies, but also theatre and dance studies). Based on this the field specific agenda as well as suitable and inclusive governance structures have been planned and proposed.

With the approval of the DFG the official founding of the NFDI4Culture was made possible and happened on the 1st of october 2020. The performing arts are represented within the different committees, panels and operating procedures by the chairmen of the society of theatre studies (gtw), the society for dance research (GTF), multiple associations (AG ARCHIV, THESID, VDT) as well as individual collections and archives. One of them is the dance archive Leipzig with the institute for theatre studies.  

NFDI4Culture’s work programme consists of 6 task areas and the performing arts play a role in most of them: 

  • TA1: Digitisation, Data Capture and Enrichment: cooperation between institutions for digitisation projects (workflow etc.)
  • TA2: Standards, Data Quality and Curation: metadata structures, research based vocabularies, mapping of terms
  • TA3: Software Tools and Data Services: development, enhancement, institutional/technical sustainability
  • TA4: Data Publication and Availability: compatability with FAIR principles, availability (longterm) to all NFDI-users
  • TA5: Question of Rights and Data Ethics: rights, protection, technical options (licensing, restricted access etc.)
  • TA6: Professionalisation, Qualification and Training, ‚Data Literacy‘: concepts for needs-based education/teaching, consultation/support
