The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Washington Irving

This gothic tale tells a scary but humourous story of greed, marriage and the power of imagination. Coming from New York, the main character and poor schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane attempts to win the heart and hand of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of the richest farmer in Sleepy Hollow. The small, quiet and somehow enchanted village is said to be haunted in foggy autumn nights by a headless horseman wearing a pumpkin instead of his head. Ichabod strongly believes in the supernatural and thus, becomes the victim of a rather mean prank of his opponent Brom Bones, who also wants to marry Katerina…

The text is suitable for a session on Halloween, autumn and the gothic genre.
