The novel, set in the year 2045 in a dystopian world, focuses on Wade Watts who enjoys his time in the virtual world of OASIS more than his reality, and he is not alone in this opinion. After the sudden death of OASIS’ creator who leaves behind puzzles on popular culture of the past, people become competitive as the winner is promised the inheritance of his fortune and with that also the inheritance of OASIS. Wade manages to solve the first puzzle and finds what is called an Easter Egg. However, with this achievement many people target him to take the prize for themselves, going as far as trying to eliminate, meaning killing, him. This game of solving tasks and finding clues turns into a matter of survival in a global virtual reality game.
