In Q & A, the inspiration for the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, Swarup tells the story of Ram Muhammed Thomas, who participates in India’s game show “Who Wants to Be a Billionaire?”. When Ram answers question after question correctly, he is arrested by the police on suspicions of cheating. During the interrogation, Ram tells them the story of his life and thereby reveals how someone who grew up as an orphan in the world’s biggest slum in Mumbai could answer these particular questions on his way to winning one billion rupees.
