I Am Jazz
Jazz Jennings and Jessica Herthel

As long as she can remember, Jazz has known she’s a girl even though those around her perceive her as a boy. She doesn’t identify with stereotypical boys’ clothing and toys and would ideally just like to be a mermaid 24/7. Her parents listen to her and take her to a doctor, who confirms that Jazz is transgender.

Based on a real story, this picture book is ideal for young readers as an introduction to gender identities and staying true to yourself. The book is wonderfully illustrated and perfect for reading aloud to young students. For older students, the reality TV show adaptation of Jazz’s life could be an interesting and informative insight into the life of a transgender teenager.
