Lutzenbergers Füsse und Nicht-lineare Dynamik der Musik

Birbaumer, N.
Institut für Medizinische Psychologie und Verhaltensneurobiologie, Tübingen

During the 37 years of collaboration and friendship with Werner the non-linearity of brain dynamics became a central topic of our research. We both assumed that the new algorithms of non-linear mathematical theory such as correlational dimension and Lyaponov exponents may allow us to predict the limits of plasticity of a particular cortical network. The assumption of increased plasticity with more deterministic chaos in the system guided the experimental approach of a series of ~20 experiments executed together with Thomas Elbert culminating in an exhaustive review in "Physiological Reviews" (1994). The non-linear approach afterwards lost his appeal, but our basic assumptions were confirmed. Now, a renaissance of non-linear analysis of brain processes regained attention in the context of on-line classification in brain-computer-interface research. The mathematical genius of W.Lutzenberger was behind all this and the status of a non-linear view on the brain will be discussed in memory of Werner Lutzenberger.
