Smugglers’ Fox
Susanna Bailey

Smugglers’ Fox is a coming-of-age novel that follows Jonah and
his younger brother Rio, who have always relied on each other,
especially during their mother’s unpredictable absences. When
their mother disappears after an incident at the beach, social
services decide to separate the boys, sending Jonah to live with a
foster carer named Mimi in Robin Hood’s Bay. Jonah is determined
to keep his promise to Rio that they will be reunited, crafting
illustrated stories for his brother and devising a three-part plan to
bring them back together. As Jonah adjusts to his new life, he
bonds with a wild fox and befriends Freddie, another child with
secrets of his own. Through these new relationships and the
discovery of a possible treasure map, Jonah learns about
resilience, hope, and the strength of family ties.
