Are you sure you want to borrow all those books? You don’t want to overdue it.
The sun is shining and the days are long. This can only mean one thing– summer has officially arrived. With the first week of this year’s school summer break, I thought back to my own school days and how literature was not my favourite companion during the summertime. Looking back I realise that my teachers simply assigned summer reading while all of us just wanted to have fun. But what if reading and fun can be combined?
Today I would like to share some Reading Challenges with you which can be used for students of different ages to make reading a fun summer activity. It is important to note that I created each challenge sheet based on my preferences and what I thought students would like, however, these challenges can be individualised.
Challenge 1- Sticker Sheets
For this particular challenge students can work with fun stickers. Every week they get four new reading challenges and if they have finished one challenge they can put a sticker on this field. The goal is to put at least one sticker every week to help the children engage more actively with literature.

Challenge 2- Reading Bingo
This challenge is exactly what its title suggests- a summer bingo for reading. Every time a student completes a challenge they get to mark it as done. Other than the sticker sheet, this specific challenge comes with some competition spirit as the students should aim to have a Bingo at the end of summer.

Here some additional ideas for activities and challenges:

Challenge 3- The Ice Cream Challenge
This exercise is for very young readers to keep track of their reading. Here, they can write the book’s title or the pages they have read into one of the scoops and stack them on top of each other.

Have a nice and relaxing summer!
