Etwa zwei Drittel der Sprachen auf der Welt sind Tonsprachen, d.h. Tonhöhe ist systematisch distinktiv, um Lexeme oder grammatische Morpheme zu unterscheiden. In diesem Seminar behandeln wir die formalen Eigenschaften von Ton, insbesondere im Rahmen von autosegmentaler Phonologie und Optimalitätstheorie und gehen dabei im Detail auf neuere Ansätze wie die optimale Domänentheorie (Cassimjee & Kisseberth, 1997) und die Theorie der Kopf-Spannen (McCarthy, 2004) ein. Inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt ist die Morphophonologie von Ton in afrikanischen Sprachen. Praktischer Schwerpunkt ist die selbstständige Anwendung der einzelnen Theorien auf neue Daten.
