Japan’s videogames between the local and the global

In this collaborative project between Leipzig University and Ritsumeikan University, we aim to rethink the “Japaneseness” of Japan’s videogames by examining them within the context of the various local and global networks and ecologies they are part of. The project will involve three workshops, as well as a series of collaborative or co-supervised research projects. Each of these projects will develop an innovative approach to Japan’s videogames capable of drawing out local specificities and at the same time situating them within their various regional and global contexts of game production, creation, contents, aesthetics, technologies, consumption, discourse, politics, and research. With this project, we aim to understand the complex structures Japan’s videogames are entangled with better, and to come up with new theoretical and methodological approaches to study them.

Configurations of exchange and student supervision

In this collaboration, we aim to gain new insights into its research field by bringing together multiple perspectives and by creating opportunities for substantial horizontal and vertical interaction between both institutions. To this end, we will coordinate a series of research projects among the researchers at both partner institutions, which are presented and discussed during our three workshops in Leipzig and Kyōto (June 2017 at Ritsumeikan University; November 2017 at Leipzig University; September 2018 at Ritsumeikan University).

Selected MA and PhD students will be able to conduct research for their individual projects at the partner institution, benefiting from the advice of experienced videogame researchers and the discussion with their peers alike.
