The Peneda Region
For several years the Castro people have adapted to local conditions by embracing a transhumant livelihood. In the past shepherds spent their Summertime in highest ground for the greener pastures, while in the Wintertime they were forced to move their cattle to lower grounds along the Laboreiro river valley to avoid the long snowy winters. Therefore the Castro people built houses in both sites. This is the reason for the 3 different types of villages found in the region: the summer villages or Brandas; the winter villages or Inverneiras and the all year long villages or «lugar fixo» such as the town of Castro Laboreiro. Since there are now fewer shepherds in the region due to people´s aging (emigration has also played a role) and climate change has caused fewer snowy winters, people chose to live permanently in their summer villages, thus the winter villages are now uninhabited.
As grazing has decreased in the winter valley, nature has regenerated itself, around the 20 winter villages found in the valley. In the last 10 years, houses in these villages are being rebuilt for tourism. This database is a tool developed under the project Reviving the Castro Valley winter villages. A região da serra da Peneda
Durante muitos anos na região castreja, persistiu um regime de transumância em que os pastores viviam nas regiões mais altas durante a estação do Verão em busca de pastos mais verdes para o seu gado, mudando-se durante o Inverno para as aldeias do vale do Rio Laboreiro para fugir aos longos nevões das zonas mais altas. Desta forma existem na região 3 tipos de aldeia: as aldeias de Verão ou Brandas, as aldeias de Inverno ou Inverneiras e os lugares fixos. Recentemente tem-se assistido ao abandono da pastorícia e também das Inverneiras, em parte devido às alterações climáticas e ao envelhecimento da população.
O abandono agrícola tem proporcionado a regeneração natural do Vale de Castro Laboreiro onde se localizam 20 aldeias inabitadas. Nos últimos 10 anos as habitações dessas aldeias têm sido alvo de recuperação para turismo.
