Homework 2

This homework is designed to make you engage with the syntactic formalism we are using. It is due by Friday of next week ([2022-12-09 Fri]), electronically, or if necessary in my mailbox.

Guidelines

Feel free to work together as much as you’d like. However, if you work together with someone else , each of you must write up their own homework. Furthermore, please include the names of all people you worked together with, in the homework.

Assignment

1. Give a minimalist grammar lexicon which can derive the following set of sentences:

   1. the monkey will play
   2. the monkey will be playing
   3. the monkey will have played
   4. the monkey will have been playing
   5. the monkey plays
   6. the monkey is playing
   7. the monkey has played
   8. the monkey has been playing
   9. the monkey seems to play
   10. the monkey seems to be playing
   11. the monkey seems to have played
   12. the monkey seems to have been playing
   13. it seems that the monkey will play

2. Provide a derivation of two sentences (describe the steps taken to derive the expression as a tree).

3. Does your analysis generate any ungrammatical sentences?
