Minimalist Syntax I

Although our slides (the second half of those from last week) deal with derivations, there was a lot of discussion about features. I decided to write up some notes about (derived) syntactic structures.

Cooper Storage

The system we introduced in the previous lecture provides a particular notation for cooper storage. Cooper storage was invented by Robin Cooper (and presented in his 1983 book) as an alternative way of interpreting sentences with quantificational elements.

H&K & Compositionality

We discussed in what sense the Heim and Kratzer semantics is not compositional as stated, and how to reformulate so that it becomes so. slides

Heim and Kratzer

The standard semantics for minimalism is the Heim and Kratzer semantics [H&K] (with variants assuming the copy theory of movement and other particularly minimalist innovations).

λ Preliminaries

The λ calculus is a language for reasoning about functions.
