Do you need to write a research paper but feel lost? This workshop is designed to lead you through the process, from drafting your thesis statement and developing an outline to writing your first draft. We will focus on academic writing skills such as paragraphing, transitions, and register to support you in the process. Students will have opportunity to go over the typical structure of research papers and examine common patterns for organizing the various sections. They will also practice summarizing, paraphrasing, and using direct quotation. Inspired by the textbook Academic Writing for Graduate Students, this workshop will give you new insight into and confidence in writing research papers.

Bachelor’s and master’s level students

Students will

  • have a clear plan for starting, developing, and finishing a research paper;
  • be aware of the recommended patterns of organization in research papers; and
  • fine-tune their writing to be in alignment with academic style guidelines.
