How dark forces shape the destiny of our universe
Einstein’s theory of general relativity, conceived 101 years ago, permits the fundamental forces holding together matter to exert a force onto the fabric of spacetime itself, thereby allowing it to stretch or contract. Some of these forces have only been found recently. In the case of “dark energy”, its effect on the stretching of spacetime is in fact the only currently known way to detect it, while other forms, known as “dark matter”, may be related to new, as yet unknown, elementary particles. The precise nature of these forces determines the dynamical evolution of the cosmos, and hence also the ultimate fate of our universe.
