Our group is coordinating the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TR 172 on "Arctic Amplification: Climate relevant atmospheric and surface processes, and feedback mechanisms" (AC)³. The TR 172 is a collaborative effort of the universities in Leipzig, Cologne and Bremen and the non-university partners Alfred Wegener Helmholtz Insitute for Polar and Marine Research and the Leibniz Insitute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig. The overarching scientific objective of (AC)³ is to identify, investigate, and evaluate the key processes contributing to Arctic Amplification, improve our understanding of the major feedback mechanisms, and quantify their relative importance for Arctic Amplification. Within (AC)³, our group is coordinating five sub-projects investigating the role of cloud and surface properties for the Arctic Amplification. The scientific goals of these projects are summarized here:



A02: Tethered balloon-borne energy budget measurements in the clouds central Arctic
A03: Impact of low-level clouds on Arctic atmospheric boundary layer turbulence and radiation
B03: Chracterization of Arctic mixed-phase clouds by airborne in-situ measurements and remote sensing
C01: Influence of surface heterogeniety on radiative forcing and retrieval of aerosol and cloud properties in the Arctic
C02: Interactions of snow on sea ice with atmospheric constituents including black carbond
