Our group investigates the interaction of spectral solar radiation with clouds and the Earth's surface with help of observations and models. For this purpose we have developed unique instrumentation (airborne, ground- and ship-based). We apply radiative transfer models to interpret the measurements. In particular, we investigate the interaction of solar radiation with clouds (Arctic mixed-phase clouds, subtropical cirrus, shallow and deep convective clouds) and the ground surface (snow, sea ice, open water, rain forest) taking into account three-dimensional radiative effects. To obtain our scientific goals we are coordinating two national collaborative DFG-projects:
