Research study for a geoelectrical pre-site survey of the drilling location within the Eger Rift - Investigation of the subsurface electrical conductivity distribution


Inhalt The epicentral area around Nový Kostel/NW-Bohemia is favorised as location for a deep borehole. The target area of the proposed drilling project is situated in the Eger Rift, a geodynamically active part of the Variscan orogenic belt in Europe. Western part of the Eger Rift is characterised by repeated occurrence of intraplate earthquake swarms, by numerous mineral springs, and CO2 emissions. Such phenomena are usually related to volcanic activity.
A comprehensive geoelectrical study (target depth 4-5 km) in the context of a pre-site survey could greatly benefit the establishment/characterization of an ICDP drilling site location in the western part of the Eger Rift and recent fluid research projects. The distribution of the electrical conductivity reproduces the different electrical geological structural units and fault zones with fluid pathways in the subsurface. The survey area is the potential drilling location in the vicinity of the most active swarm earthquake zone Novy Kostel.
Prior to the large scale field measurements the project contains a one year preparatory study, which on the one hand aims the theoretical modeling of expected electrical measuring effects of a deep geoelectrical exploration (necessary array size up to 25 km). A priori information of previous and recent research activities (results from seismology, seismics, magnetotellurics, gas-geochemistry) in the target area should be included. On the other hand, testing measurements to check e.g. the signal quality and the logistic efforts are planned within preparatory study to optimize the further field work.
